Favorite Books – Audiobooks

This is the first post of a 5-part series dedicated to our favorite books for children and youth.

  • Part 1: Audiobooks
  • Part 2: Picture Books
  • Part 3: Easy Readers
  • Part 4: Chapter Books
  • Part 5: Read-Aloud Books

One of the most fun and unanticipated benefits of being a parent is that I have thoroughly enjoyed children’s literature.  As a kid, I enjoyed reading, sometimes, if a book really grabbed my imagination and I got sucked into the story.  As a parent, I love to see my own kids discover a great story, but not one to feel left out of the fun, I have read most of these books too!

Unfortunately, time is limited, and I have not (yet!) listened to all the wonderful children’s books out there.  I will offer my family’s favorites of the ones we have heard.

Audiobooks help pass the time on long car rides.  They are also great to listen to while working on other projects (cooking, building rockets, playing with LEGO, etc.)  I can’t even count how many audiobooks I have checked out of my local public library, but for the most part, they have all been worth the time to listen.

Below are some of my family’s favorites, listed approximately in order age appropriateness.  The ones towards the top of the list I would recommend for younger children, the ones at the end of the list may contain more mature themes.  The age range of listeners in my house ranged from approximately 2rd grade through adult for many of these books, but please use your own discretion.
